Myofascial Release is a form of manual therapy
(One that utilizes only the therapists hands). In Latin Myo means
muscle and fascial refers to the tighter fibrous bands of connective
tissue. Fascia is throughout the body, not only surrounding the
muscles but also as a supportive structure for blood vessels and
nerves. Myofascial release is different to massage therapy and is
designed to be a gentle stretching technique designed to release
tighter more tense bands of tissue that can form in the fascia after
an injury.
Joint Mobilization:
This form of manual therapy is designed to release
restrictions of the joints. A therapist will assess the passive
movements, glides and ranges in an individual joint. If a joint
motion is decreased a mobilization technique maybe performed.
Mobilization is the gentle restoration of the joint motion utilizing
small passive oscillations. Mobilization differs from a manipulation
in that it is a small motion that is within the patients control. A
manipulation is a small amplitude high speed technique that is not
within the patient control.
Restoration of joint and myofascial mobility is
essential to regain full pain-free function.
